The Point System
(or)
The Fate Game

Overview

The Fate Game is part writing project, part roleplaying game. The game aspect is focused on points (also known as "pts"). These pts are required to participate in the game and to "buy" in-game bonuses for your character; they can be earned in any number of ways (most of them silly).

Joining the Fate Game

An author must acquire 20 pts to enter the Fate Game. Addition to the player list comes after receiving the required 20 entry pts. The player's author name will be added to the "Directors List", and their character's profile will be added to the Cast List. An author name can be your real or your perferred name. Your Fated Name has to be different from your author name, so we can make distinctions between the "Authors" and the "Characters". There are three basic ways to obtain these entry pts.

  1. Gift pts: anyone who has written for FF:F at some point is welcome to join without any questions asked. You will receive 20 pts for each Fated part you've written.
  2. Sponsorship for readers and non-FF:F writers who have friends who will put up the 20 entry pts. NOTE: Sponsors have every right to make conditions on their sponsorship. The types of sponsorship are:
    1. The "Loan Sponsorship": You will pay back the 20 pts, and are in the debt of the sponsor until you do.
    2. The "Favor Sponsorship": You are given the 20 pts in exchange for doing certain things for the sponsor.
    3. The "Teammate Sponsorship": You are going to join the sponsor's team.
    4. The "Gift" sponsorship: All or part of your required points are given free of charge to you by a (very nice) player.
  3. Earned pts: You answer the questionnaire and score within the 20 pts range (at least 20 correct answers). Entry this way means you don't have to be a FF:F writer nor do you have to worry about getting a sponsor. Also, if you get more than 20 answers correct, you will receive that amount of pts for your starting amount. (Expect to get bugged about being too lazy to write a part if you go this route. ^_~)

Reason for entry requirements: The 20 pts are needed to give you a fair standing amongst the other writers. Plus, when your part comes...if you unfortunately do any of the things on the P.T.B. LIST that call for your pts to be removed...you don't go into the negative (or your chances are reduced). Pts are also to limit the number of players to a managable number, and to weed out people who aren't willing to make the commitment to the Fate Game.

Guest Writers: The thought of commitment scares you? Or maybe you loathe the idea of adding a S-I avatar (sometimes known as a "Mary Sue") to the Fate Game? No prob, if you still like the story sign on
as a "guest writer". You won't get points for yourself, but you could give them to
the character of your choice.

Conditions of Remaining within the Fate Game

  1. You continue to write parts and make an effort to contribute to the story.
  2. You have a positive number of pts, or are at least trying to get out of the red.
  3. You respect other writers and the rules of the Fate Game.

Pts Within the Game

Pts are awarded/removed according to the P.T.B. LIST. Anyone who feels they have had pts illegally or unfairly removed may petition to get the pts back. If they can find a good legitimate reason to back their claim, they will most likely have their pts returned with an apology.

Combining Pts

Team members may combine pts totals to aid in purchasing big ticket items, or to pool resources. If there is a team amount, the players each get an equal cut of it. All of the pts players earn individually go into the pool to be split up amongst the team members. Downside: The "mistakes" or removed pts come from the players' total, and everyone's amount is reduced in accordance.

Borrowing Pts

A writer may borrow up to 50 pts from another writer. This is a constant total. It does not matter if it is an inter-team trade or not. 50 pts, and the pts will be repayed. While players are in debt to other players, their characters may have to act as double agents or join up with the other team until they have cleared their debts. NOTE: If a player is very generous and wants to give the pts for free, then the "gratis" deal condition must be made clear before the pts are exchanged. (Those who feel sneaky can try to offer "gratis" deals and then "change their minds" when it comes down to the handover.)

Score Updates

Score updates should occur once a part (bonus pts are offered for those who find creative ways to work them into the plot), but there is no penalty for not placing an update within the text...IF it is included after the author's notes. The Main Score Sheet is kept on the Update page, and is updated after each part to show the change in point totals.

Miscellaneous Rules and Information

Writing a Fate Game Chapter

Fate Game chapters are usually HTML, unlike the other stories here at Beware the Radish. However, the use of HTML should be limited to simple features like colors, text styles, maybe fonts, horizontal rules. Some things definitely not allowed would be Java, JavaScript or sound files. I will put a small "link section" at the bottom of Fate Game chapters (as I do on all chapters submitted to Beware the Radish). To see what this "link section" would look like, check any of the pages on Beware the Radish (like this one).

Fate Game chapters may also be submitted in text format. If you want help with formatting or HTML coding, contact me.
